Vehicles and vehicle combinations, whose dimensions, axle loads or total weights exceed the limits permitted in Germany require special permit according to § 70 StVZO and permit according to § 29 section 3 StVO. These vehicles require additional exemption according to § 46 StVO if vehicular dimensions are exceeded as follows due to load: Vehicles and load must not be higher than 4 m and not wider than 2.55 m (refrigerator vehicles 2.60 m) on motorways and roads. Load must not project on front of vehicle and up to 1.5 m are permitted aft (on transports in Germany up to 100 km up to 3 m). Vehicle overall length including load must not exceed 20 m.
Relevant both for permanent exception permits and individual permit are the higher administrative authorities of the federal states as well as the road traffic authorities of the state where the vehicle is supposed to cross border. Arnold Speditions GmbH has a list of relevant authorities, with addresses, responsible for issuance of permits for heavy loads and oversizes/overweights at major border crossing points.
Exemptions and permits are often connected to conditions. For instance, for certain distances, escorts and escorting vehicles - which Arnold Speditions GmbH can make available in each case - police escort, driving time restrictions, marking and other safety measures may be prescribed.
(*1) Maximum length of trucks is 18.75 m if maximum permissible partial lengths of overall loading length of 15.65 m and so-called system length of 16.40 m (greatest distance between very front point of loading space behind cab and very aft point of trailer loading space of the vehicle combination) is not exceeded. (Otherwise overall length may be only max. 18.00 m).
(*2) Car transporters may have an overall length of max. 20.75 m: Vehicle length = 18.75 m plus rear overhang of load of max. 1.50 m as well as 0.50 m front overhang of load beginning above height of 2.50 m. Height has been fixed to 4 m plus accepted tolerance of 5 cm. Exceeding that would mean paying a fine. Excess of height 4.20 will cause a fine against driver and vehicle owner.
(*3) Max. overall length of truck-tractor is 16.50 m provided the max. permissible partial lengths of the semi-trailer axle of fifth-wheel kingpin up to rear limit does not exceed 12.50 m and front overhang radius does not exceed 2.04 m. (Otherwise overall length may be only max. 15.50 m).
